From Campuses to Communities: Outcomes of the Workshop in Strasbourg

The FOREU4ALL community gathered in Strasbourg last June for the workshop "From Campuses to Communities: Enhancing Engagement and Sense of Belonging in European Universities", jointly organised by the topical groups on Communication & Dissemination and Community Engagement. The event, held on 2-3 June 2026 at the European Parliament, was hosted by the University of Strasbourg and the EPICUR Alliance. The collective insights, shared practices and practical recommendations emerging from the workshop are now available, offering guidance for strengthening engagement, inclusion and a sense of belonging across European Universities alliances.

Representatives from 58 European Universities alliances - 132 participants attending in person and over 90 joining online - explored how alliances can move beyond institutional cooperation and become genuine communities for students, academics and professional staff.

Overall, the workshop reinforced the idea that long-term institutional transformation depends not only on governance structures and mobility opportunities, but also on fostering meaningful human connections and a shared sense of belonging. The discussions reflected several common priorities:

• Strengthening community-building beyond project management structures;
• Improving awareness of alliance opportunities;
• Reducing barriers to participation and mobility;
• Recognising contributions from students and staff; and
• Communicating more effectively the value of European Universities alliances.

Participants collaboratively developed 12 practical prototypes designed to strengthen engagement, recognition, communication and the sense of belonging among students, academics and professional staff.
