European Universities Alliances as Role Models

The present survey was conducted as part of the LTA (Long Term Activity) SPREAD EUI. Its results offer numerous insights on the perceptions of higher education institutions not engaged in an alliance about the initiative, their favourite topics of interest with respect to its outcomes and their needs for benefiting of them.

The survey generated a total of 385 non-EUI HEIs respondents from 20 countries across Europe. The large majority of respondents are HEIs’ representatives dealing with internationalisation topics either at central or at faculty level. Overall, 45 % of the answers were given by people in management positions. The respondents are based at institutions of various types and sizes, universities of applied sciences (37 %) and research universities (33 %) being the largest groups and 25 % being more specialized, generally smaller institutions.

The evaluation of this survey was a very important basis for understanding the necessities, demands and opinions of higher education institutions not involved in an Erasmus+ European Universities alliance. Thus, it laid the foundation for the consortium of the SPREAD EUI - project to continue its work geared towards facilitating an effective transfer of best practices of the alliances for the benefit of the whole higher education community.

The survey also helped to create awareness among HEIs not involved in an alliance to show them what potential benefits they could gain from the results and innovations created by alliances. One of the next steps in the project will therefore be to envisage how the results and transformational deliverables can be made available to the HEIs not engaged in an alliance as well as to other stakeholders in higher education and society in general.
