Enhancing learning and teaching through staff development
This publication is based on outcomes and lessons learnt from the EU co-funded ‘Staff development for learning and teaching at European universities’ (STAFF-DEV) project. It is led by the European University Association (EUA), with partners from the University of Oslo, Utrecht University, University College Cork, and Ruhr University Bochum.
The document outlines key policy recommendations for university leadership, higher education authorities and networks to enhance learning and teaching through staff development policies and capacities, recognition for teaching, academic assessment and careers:
- Staff development should be connected to and integrated within a broader ecosystem that universities develop to enhance learning and teaching.
- To enable the successful development of teaching staff, it is crucial to recognise the full range and diversity of university teaching tasks and tailor staff development to this.
- A lack of time and recognition is a major barrier to engagement in staff development. The relationship between teaching, staff development and career progression should be clarified.
- Higher education institutions should support and encourage inclusion and equity in staff participation and engagement in professional development as part of their broader commitment to ensuring quality learning and teaching.
