Shaping the future: European universities alliances for a competitive Europe

March 2025

Last Thursday, the European Commission brought together all European Universities alliances, representatives of Seal of Excellence holders, Members of the European Parliament, national and regional authorities, higher education stakeholders, European student organizations, and private sector leaders for a crucial discussion on the future of European Higher Education.

In the coming five years, we really need to work on the fifth freedom and the European Universities Alliances are the flagship for this fifth freedom. This is what Enrico Letta proclaimed in his key note address. Letta is the former Prime-Minister of Italy, and author of the report “Much More than a Market” (April 2024 - https://lnkd.in/dUMcUAKQ).

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Beatrix Busse, Chair of the Board, FOREU4ALL European Universities Alliances Community of Practice, and EUniWell - European University for Well-Being, reflected: “Alliances are the beacon of European values and co-creation, forerunners of excellence. Engulfed in an ocean of global competitiveness, alliances help us achieve models of individual, societal, and planetary well-being.”

FOREU4ALL Session

  • We were happy to welcome to the newly funded alliances and the Seal of Excellence holders
  • Participants discussed about the expectations for FOREU4ALL, emphasizing its collaborative nature and a space to work together to extend the impact of alliances
  • We discussed the ‘ALL’ in FOREU4ALL, which relates to the 65 Alliances, but also the wider sector such as Seal of Excellence holders, universities outside of the initiative, policy makers and advocacy organisations.
  • A key priority for FOREU4ALL is to communicate about the impact alliances are making, and showcasing this in a structured manner. Stay tuned for our upcoming webpage!

It was great to be together with 450 colleagues, and to learn that the European University alliances are at the very heart of the current and upcoming EU policies in education, skills and competitiveness.
