Review the impact and transformational potential of the European Universities Initiative
June 26, 2025

If you are curious about the European Universities Initiative, the European Commission’s report "Outcomes and transformational potential of the European Universities initiative" is a great place to start.
Some key takeaways that show the scale and ambition behind the initiative include:
Scale & Reach
- 65 alliances connecting more than 570 Higher Education Institutions across 35 countries
- Involving >2.200 associated partners, including 35 Ukrainian HEIs
- Representing 11 million students - half of all students in Europe
Academic Innovation
- Over 600 joint study programmes and courses
- Including 160 joint degrees and >430 micro-credential pathways (and this number has surely grown since 2023, the data collection deadline for the report)
Student-Centric Governance
- Nearly all alliances include students in their governance structures
- 63% grant full voting rights to students, a strong commitment to co-creation
Alliance Diversity & Thematic Focus
- Key themes and profiles are specified on page 17, a useful resource for understanding the unique strengths of each alliance.
National Support
- Please consult page 274 showing how member states support alliances.
The alliance factsheets are also a great starting point to understand different areas of expertise across networks.
While the data reflects the state of play in October 2023, the report remains a valuable starting point for understanding the transformational potential of the initiative, and where we can go from here.
